Accessibility and Lecture2Go
1. I am planning to give or coordinate a lecture to be recorded with Lecture2Go. Who takes care of maintaining accessibility?
The contact person for accessibility at events is always the organiser themselves. It is therefore also their responsibility to ensure accessibility for the Lecture2Go recordings. This includes, for example, the appointment of sign language interpreters as well as the provision of subtitles and, if necessary, translations into German. You can find more information on these UHH pages:
- www.kus.uni-hamburg.de/themen/recht/barrierefreiheit/faq.html
2. how can I have my event translated into German Sign Language (DGS)?
Sign language interpreters (GSD) should ideally be hired a few weeks before the live recording. Professional GSDs usually work freelance in pairs and take turns every 15 minutes or so. If you are planning a presentational event, the interpreting team can be live on site and filmed if this has already been agreed in advance (see point 4). However, due to the pandemic, many GSDs also work online with ZOOM and other video conferencing tools, and the interpretation can also be recorded there if necessary.
3. How do I find a team of interpreters?
Please use the request form at suche-dolmetscher"AT"bgn-ev.de. Mails to this address are automatically forwarded to about 120 members of the GSD professional association in Northern Germany (www.bgn-ev.de) .
In order to decide whether an appointment can be accepted, the GSDs need the following information in advance:
-
When is the appointment? (date, time)
-
How long does the appointment last?
-
Where will the event take place?
-
What (e.g. workshop, lecture with recording and publication on the WWW)?
-
Languages to be interpreted between (e.g. German/DGS, or English/DGS)
-
Contact person/contact information (telephone number, email address)
-
Please write that you only wish to receive a reply if they are interested.
If you do not wish to receive any further feedback on your enquiry because you have already found a GSD team, you can inform the GSD of this in a second email. If you do not receive any feedback in the first request, start the request again.
4. What do I have to bear in mind if I want to have an event translated into DGS?
GSDs are free to accept orders and will usually only work if they receive preparatory material in advance so that they can prepare themselves optimally for the interpreting assignment (in this context, for example, the PPT slides and/or an audio recording of a test lecture).
It must already be made clear in the request that the live interpretation is to be recorded and will be permanently available on the internet. Currently (as of 2020), the minimum fee per GSD for face-to-face meetings is €75 per hour of service, plus VAT if applicable. Travel time is also remunerated accordingly. Since the interpretation is to be provided online for Lecture2Go, it will generally be necessary to increase the fee.
For presentational events, it must be ensured for filming that the lighting conditions allow for good video quality. Also, GSD should be positioned against a visually calm background (ideally monochrome).
5. Can I add a DGS translation to an already recorded lecture?
In principle, this is also possible. It must be clarified where the DGS translation can be recorded (provisional or professional film studio). If necessary, a subsequent translation can also be done by only one GSD. The effort for post-production (time alignment with the video track of the speaker) must be planned for. The costs, fees, tasks and obligations of the GSD must be contractually clarified before the assignment.
6. How can I have my presentation subtitled?
There are professional written interpreters who can transcribe all parts of an event in real time or afterwards. The German Federal Association of Written Interpreters lists its members:: https://bsd-ev.org/register/
Whether these persons can also transcribe English speakers must be enquired about. The required preparation material, cost coverage, fee, etc. must also be contractually clarified before the assignment.
Instructions for the independent subtitling of L2Go videos can be found at this PDF File (in german).
The Lecture2Go platform also offers the option of automatic German and English subtitling. This function is used in principle for recordings supervised by us.
