Studium Generale
A reflective approach to diverse knowledge cultures and the ability to critically self-reflect are important components of a university degree course. The Studium Generale particularly accentuates these skills in the structure of the Bachelor's degree courses of the participating faculties. Bachelor of Arts students have the opportunity to extend their view beyond the limits of their chosen combination of major and minor subjects and to develop critical perspectives on their own position in academic discourse.
Courses and other offerings
In addition to the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education also make a significant contribution to the wide range of courses on offer, which consists of around 400 courses from over 50 disciplines to choose each semester. In addition, there are other special courses funded by the Excellence Strategy, which are closely linked to the strategic development goals and central research topics of the Universität Hamburg. Each semester, current, socially relevant key topics are identified separately as key areas of study in the Studium Generale (e.g. sustainability, digitality, migration, religious diversity, diversity & gender). In individual areas, it is possible to acquire additional certificates or micro-credentials by choosing certain courses in focus areas.
Universität Hamburg strives to ensure that all faculties gradually participate in Studium Generale and contribute courses to the curriculum. The organizational and conceptual responsibility for the Studium Generale lies with the Head Office for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Humanities, which coordinates the curriculum and ensures the capacity adequacy and academic quality of the courses offered. The courses offered in the Studium Generale are listed separately each semester in the STiNE course catalog.
Registration and participation
Students from the participating faculties register for the Studium Generale courses during the STiNE registration phases. The courses are attended as part of the optional area or free elective area of the Bachelor's degree programs. All courses in the Studium Generale area generally conclude with an (ungraded) coursework, participation is shown on the transcript of records.
